Top 10 Dumbest Things We Say To Our Kids

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Since having kids, I tend to say things I’ve never said and do things I’ve never done. Being a mom has made me rattle off the dumbest questions and most pointless sentences of my life. Some so ridiculous that after I say it, I think to myself: “What does that even mean?” Here’s a few examples of things I’ve said recently:

I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Influence-Central for Jif To Go Dippers. I received a sample to facilitate my review and a thank you item for participating.

I would love to say that I am a completely homemade type of mom, that everything that comes out of my kitchen I slaved over for hours to be able to provide for my kids, but I'm not. And in this day in age I see nothing wrong with it. Now don't get me wrong I have friends that will make completely homemade snacks like fruit leather and more that take at least several hours to complete from start to finish, but I just don't have time for that. I commend them for it, but I just can't. So when I go to the store I am looking specifically for items that fit this criteria:

:: Healthy

:: Mess Free

:: Convenient

:: Can be eaten on the run

:: And the last and most important... kid friendly. Something they will actually eat!

There are a lot of things that fit my first four criteria, but my kids won't eat it or they complain about it; which essentially equals me and my husband eating whatever it is or money down the drain. Either way it's not good.

Our family in total has been to 31 states in the last 2 years! That's a lot of traveling and a lot of food for everyone so being able to have a easy snack taken care of is huge!

I don't have enough time in the day to spend watching my adorable 4 year old slowly eating his snack and making "good guys and bad guys" out of it. Food time for him turns into a full blown production. So having something he can eat anytime anywhere is a lifesaver.

What I do have time for and a snack that meets all the "demanding mom" criteria are the Jif To Go Dippers. Have you tried them yet? I would love to know what you think. I toss one to the kids as we are heading out the door or to my hubby when he goes on a bike ride. Jif To Go Dippers are also great for adults! My husband loves having something he can stop and quickly eat that gives him energy to keep riding. Now keep in mind he cycles 30-60 miles every time he goes out! So that says a lot about how much he approves of Jif To Go Dippers as a quality snack.

We also have enjoyed them on the trip we are currently on; right now I am writing you from Martha's Vineyard! We found that Jif To Go Dippers are a great snack to take on the plane and to have when we haven't been close to food options or aren't quite hungry enough for a whole meal. My favorite is the chocolate and my hubbies favorite is the peanut butter and the kids like both. I absolutely love Jif To Go Dippers as an alternative to chips and other unhealthy snacks. Typically when you need a quick snack you will find yourself going for a greasy bag a chips and feeling very unsatisfied afterward, but that's not the case with Jif To Go Dippers. You know that you are getting protein, fiber, potassium and healthy fats when eating peanut butter that you need. I don't know of any other convenient on the go snack that can do that! Be sure to grab Jif To Go Dippers for your "on the go" family!

Creating Oral Health Care Superheroes #MC

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for LISTERINE. I received samples for this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.

Our kids are pretty obsessed superheroes so we try to use that theme when encouraging them on good habits. We want to make sure our kids are eating healthy so their superhero bodies are growing strong and we want them to have superhero attitudes which for us means being super kind and friendly to others and trying to create happy times with happy attitudes. Like most families we want our kids to have "heroic habits". So when it comes to oral hygiene we use that same principle and let our kids know that part of being a superhero is also having awesome healthy and strong teeth. This is point really hits close to me because on my side of the family we have a long history of bad dental genetics and we are prone to cavities and other issues, so I knew that I wanted it to be different with my kids and I wanted them to have super healthy teeth. With that in mind our kiddos know that a huge part of their "superhero responsibilities" includes keeping their teeth healthy and clean. Normally that just entails brushing their teeth for two minutes, but we recently started to use LISTERINE SMART RINSE and at first I was concerned if my kids would even use it or like it, and it turns out they LOVE it! They beg to be able to use it every night and love swooshing it around in their mouths. Be sure to grab some next time you are at the store, your kids will love it!

My husband and I have also "upped" our superhero tooth cleaning skills by flossing more often. This is something I have always had an issue doing, I don't know why, but I have just always hated flossing. I do understand how important it is though... it is really embarrassing for me to tell people this but when I was younger I lost two of my back teeth due to poor oral health care and bad genetics. And while I can't do anything about genetics I can do a lot more about my oral health care routine and I can make sure I am doing what I need to do so I don't lose any more teeth. This includes flossing which I personally love using the flosser, I feel it makes it a little easier to floss and ease makes me actually do it and not put it off! And speaking of easy... you can also buy all of your favorite LISTERINE products from the comfort of your own home!

After flossing and brushing the last step of our "heroic oral health habits" is to use mouthwash! Now, as you can tell from the pics above my kids absolutely love this step and so do I! I love feeling like my mouth is completely clean and I don't have any lingering food pieces left in my mouth. You can also use LISTERINE HEALTHY WHITE to help get those pearly whites you want!

So do you think your family is  ready to be oral health care superheros? What do you use or do with your kids to enforce good oral hygiene? Let us know!

Pediatric Smiles of Orem Review

Monday, February 17, 2014

I have a confession to make. I hate going to the dentist. Just the thought of going makes me ill. Part of the problem would have to be that due to being in a state of constant magnesium deficiency (due to a genetic heart condition) I have always had bad teeth no matter how hard I try to take care of them. The other reason would just have to be that I have had some crummy dentist experiences in my life that have led to more than one nightmare.

Having said that, maybe you can understand why I have procrastinated so long in taking my children to have their teeth checked out. I have two children (one will be 4 next month and one will be 3 in the beginning of May) and until this last week they have never gone to the dentist.

With our children being so young (and wiggly) I didn’t think there was a need to take them in yet. That is until I saw some signs of early tooth decay on my sons teeth one night after brushing his teeth. I was shocked. My husband and I have always been careful to make sure that our children eat healthy meals. We limit the amount of sweets they eat (including fruit snacks.) As for drink soda is not allowed, and juice is a rare treat. That’s right in our house we drink mainly water, and vitamin D Milk. In addition to their diet we have made sure that our children’s teeth are brushed every night (since their first tooth popped out.) After briefly freaking out we decided (despite my personal fears) that it was time to take our children to a dentist.

After asking a lot of friends and doing a little looking around, we decided to take our kids to Pediatric Smiles of Orem. Let me tell you how glad I am that we did. The first thing I noticed upon entering their office was how child friendly the place was. My daughter was excited to see a coloring book and crayons on the table; my son was entranced by the fish tank and later the table with the wood train set.  It was nice to see them happily distracted while I filled out the official paperwork.

When it came time for us to go back they suggest that I have my daughter (the almost 4 year old) get her teeth cleaned first to show her younger brother everything would be ok. The dental assistant was friendly and patient as she explained to my daughter all the tools she was going to use and what she was going to use. Then a movie was started on a tv mounted on the ceiling so my daughter could watch (and listen thanks to some nifty headphones) while they cleaned her teeth. My daughter was so at ease they had no problem working on her.

When it came time for my son he did great for the cleaning but I knew he would get fussy when they did the exam, but I needn’t have worried. After I voiced my concerns they decided to have his teeth checked out by Dr. Shepherd immediately after his cleaning so he could be in and out as quick as possible and then we would have Dr. Shepherd check out my daughter’s teeth.

Dr. Shepherd and his staff were totally prepared and knew just how to talk and hold my children while doing their job that I was seriously impressed. Unfortunately, both of my children had tooth decay on their teeth (cringe). I had a lot of questions (mainly how could this happen???) Dr. Shepherd was patient and informative and soon I felt much better. He explained that their main goal at Pediatric Smiles was to help parents PREVENT teeth decay in their children so they wont have to come in to get work done. However when work is needed, they always strive for a good experience for parents and children as well as quality work.  We talked about my options and then quickly set up a plan of action for both of my children’s teeth.

Next week I get to take my daughter back to have her teeth officially worked on, but with how well they handled my children a few days ago, I am way less stressed then I would otherwise be. My daughter is actually looking forward to going back. Although, this excitement to go back might be due in part with the fact that after the cleaning and exam, my children were each given a balloon and little prize (as well as a tooth brush, tooth paste, and floss.) for good behavior.

If you are looking for a great pediatric dentist (in Utah County) for your children I highly recommend Pediatric Smiles in Orem, Utah. Your children will love them and so will you.

Alphie The Squid: Awesome Game For Kids and Adults!!

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Alphie the Squid is an ocean exploration game that allows the user to follow an adorable little squid, named Alphie, through the deep blue sea to discover fish and aquatic creatures while racking up points to move to the next level.  The game is not only fun, but also educational.  When playing the game, the user needs to understand the characteristics and abilities of a real squid in order to effective conquer the enemies and rise to the top of the oceanic food chain aka become a big squid.

The game is extremely user friendly and suitable for adults and children alike.  Upon launching the game, the user can view the gallery which details the creatures and treasure fish that the user will need to discover.   As the user discovers the various animals, the picture becomes clickable and a short summary of the animal is available to the user.  Below is a picture of the gallery with the Giant Squid activated:

After a review of the gallery, the user starts at “The Beginning” of the ocean (the follow on levels have aquatic oriented names such as Blue Lagoon and Current Rides).  The purpose at this point is to swim along the ocean, eating fish and avoiding enemies.  The user only needs their finger to direct Alphie through his habitat.  Any user that is familiar with a touch screen phone or tablet will have no issue using the game.  Below is a picture of a seemingly satisfied Archie after he discovered a Parrot Fish!

The navigation of the game is simple and small pop up window will appear periodically and provide key directions, such as to avoid certain dangerous creature as Alphie is approaching an area infested with that particular animal.  As the user gets further into the game, the abilities of the baby squid become more integral to the success of the game. For example, Alphie can camouflage himself and then hypnotize his target in order to successfully capture and eat his prey.

Overall the graphics of the game are great.  The colors are vivid and the detail of the sea life and the seascape is true to life.  The music is nice, elevator type music that won’t get on your nerves and there is an option to shut the music off completely.  The various prompts and pop-ups that appear throughout the game are helpful and not annoying.  This isn’t really a game for speed.  It is more about collecting the fish, learning about the fish/creatures,  moving to the next level and exploring numerous facets of the ocean.  This is a perfect game to play with a child to take advantage of all the learning opportunities without worrying about failing a level by running out of time.

This is a paid app that I downloaded from iTunes and used an iPad to play it. The company that produces the game, Crystal Entertainment, has a solid online presence with an abidance of information to assist in the purchase decision or to help along the way after the game purchase.

If you have an android device you can snag it for FREE on Amazon!

Make sure you like Alphie on Facebook, or follow him on Twitter.  You can also find him on Google+ and a game trailer can be found HERE.

The game can be purchased via the following links:

About Mamas Spot

We are a family of four that left it all behind to go travel the world. No, literally we left it all. We sold all of our possessions, packed what we could into four suitcases and said goodbye to suburban life. All we own is now pulled behind us as we travel to new and exciting destinations. Showing our kids the world and teaching them about new cultures, food, and ways of life is now our 9-5.

We love watching our kids learn, and learning along side them. Together we have now explored many new countries, visited family on the other side of the world, and made memories that will last a lifetime.

Welcome to our journey!
