Becoming financially responsible has been a huge topic in our home recently. With two older kids we want to make sure they are fiscally responsible and we know it’s our job as parents to make sure they are ready for the real world. We have set up budgets and jobs for all of our kids, but it can be difficult to distribute that money to them. Gone are the days of a piggy bank. In this day in age with so much technology it just seems so antiquated.

Lately, I am blown away by all the amazing opportunities kids have now days. So much information and technology right at their fingertips. My daughter is nine, and there isn’t anything she can’t easily learn. At her age, I would have had to head to the library and hope they had a book on what I wanted to learn. It was difficult, and I missed a lot of opportunities because of this. I am so grateful, though that it can be different for my daughter. She can do anything she wants and, with practice and focus, learn new abilities and skills.

I currently know pleasantries for five different languages other than my own, but at times that’s not enough. While in France, knowing how to say please, thank you and hello doesn’t get me far when trying to give an address to a taxi. I need to be able to communicate more!

Whether you travel around the globe (like our family) or head out short trips or “staycations” it can be hard to know what to pack. Over time I have become a much better packer though and as a mom I am apparently pre-programmed to make sure I have every possible necessity for any possible situation (you just never know when you might need to MacGyver something out of two pencils, a baby wipe and your kids chewed up gum they handed back to you).

As you start to become a more seasoned traveler there are items you pack in your suitcase that are vital and some you come to realize just aren’t necessary and can be tossed out. This past year we have been able to weed out quite a few items that just aren’t needed, but we have found one that has become an essential that every traveler, backpacker, camper or really any household should have.

About Mamas Spot

We are a family of four that left it all behind to go travel the world. No, literally we left it all. We sold all of our possessions, packed what we could into four suitcases and said goodbye to suburban life. All we own is now pulled behind us as we travel to new and exciting destinations. Showing our kids the world and teaching them about new cultures, food, and ways of life is now our 9-5.

We love watching our kids learn, and learning along side them. Together we have now explored many new countries, visited family on the other side of the world, and made memories that will last a lifetime.

Welcome to our journey!
