Great kids activity for cheap! Homemade Finger-Paint

February 2011

Easy

My little girl did finger painting for the first time today, now that she's 2 (I'm not sure why it took us so long to get around to doing this). Unfortunately I have the only toddler in the world who hates having her hands messy which normally comes in handy a lot, but not when it comes to finger painting. So it took some persuasion, but after about 15 min. she started to realize it might be fun (although she preferred a paint brush) This ended up being a fun and very cheap activity. If you want to make your own finger paint for a lot cheaper than store bought here are two recipes:

Homemade Finger paint Recipes

Easy finger paint

1 cup Flour
1 cup Water
1/4 cup soap
A couple of drops of Food Coloring, you can also use Kool-aid I used one packet.

Directions:

Mix all items until there are no lumps and paint is smooth. Keep sealed in an airtight container and refrigerate.

You can divide the batch up into smaller amounts and use a different color of food coloring for each batch.

Cornstarch finger paint

3 cups water
1 cup cornstarch
food coloring

Directions:

In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil.  Dissolve cornstarch in a separate bowl with water.   Remove boiling water from heat and add cornstarch mixture.  Return to heat, stirring constantly.  Boil until the mixture is clear and thick (about 1 minute).  Remove from heat.

As the mixture is cooling, divide into separate bowls and add food coloring.

And you can always do the easy & yummy pudding finger paint

Directions: Just make a package of chocolate pudding. (kids really love this one) and they can eat as much as they want.
