Our Top Resort Pick For 2021!

I am definitely not a winter person, I need those summer days to thrive! Unfortunately, I live in a state that has a long cold winter/spring and so our family planned an escape this year to San Diego! Nothing says vacation quite the ocean, beautiful beaches and warm air of San Diego.

We were a little concerned about how travel would be right now, but we were assured that our hotel, The Kona Kai, was taking every precaution to keep their guests healthy and safe.

Once we arrived at The Kona Kai I knew it was going to be an amazing stay. The Kona Kai is located in the heart of San Diego and is situated on Shelter island with views of the marina and the bay. The views are seriously breathtaking! The Kona Kai has been newly remodeled and the rooms will immediately put you in a relaxed state of mind.

We visited as a family of four, but we will definitely be heading back in the future for a more romantic getaway. The Kona Kai is one of the few resorts that fits all types of travel and would be great as a couples getaway, family travel or even solo and business travel.

The Kona Kai has many types of rooms to choose from and we stayed in a Waterfront Fireplace Junior Suite and in a Bayview suite. If you are traveling as a family and require a little more space and privacy I highly recommend one of their multiple room suites. These have plenty of space for kids and adults.

The Kona Kai Resort has so much to offer families we found ourselves spending a lot of time at the resort almost forgetting to go off and explore San Diego! The resort has multiple pools including an adults-only pool for those looking for a bit more relaxation. It also has an amazing courtyard with games for kids and adults to have some evening fun when the sun goes down.

One of our family’s favorite activities was the beachside fire pit s’mores. The resort has supplies you can purchase to take to the fire pits for a fun snack. My son's favorite activity is roasting s’mores so he was beyond thrilled to be able to do this every night!

The resort also has complementary cruising bikes available to guests. One of the best ways to get around Shelter Island is to bike it! This will easily be a family favorite activity!

Kona Kai Resort boasts an amazing on-site dining option as well; The Vessel Restaurant & Bar. Due to current circumstances, we preferred to have all of our meals room service style or to-go. We did a picnic one afternoon on the local beach and they provided takeaway boxed lunches, including two kid-friendly lunches. I ordered a Kona Club Sandwich and I can honestly say it was one of the best club sandwiches I’ve had. I hear the Vessel burger is also a favorite so be sure to give it a try!

Since we have spent so many years traveling I now have a test to gauge how great a resort really is and I base this on how often you want to leave the resort to explore. Kona Kai Resort makes it hard to want to leave the property. They offer so much fun, relaxation, and ways to make lasting memories you almost forget to explore outside of the resort. It’s not hard to see why The Kona Kai Resort comes in at #3 in Southern California for the Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards. It’s definitely #1 on my list! Head over here to start planning your stay today!

We were hosted for this stay, as always our opinions are our own.
